Growing Love is a community project to raise money to create a garden for the Mills family, who have spent the last seven months loving and caring for their baby boy, Leroy.
Leroy was born not breathing. When he was finally brought home from hospital he required round the clock care which meant that his parents Natasha and Peter had to put a whole bunch of things, including paid employment, on hold to take care of him.
Leroy died a short time ago, but while he was alive, he created the most extraordinary community around him. The honesty, strength, courage and love of his parents has been an inspiration to everyone who has been touched by their story. Leroy and his journey has created so much gratitude, love, community and joy.
We want to give something back.
Growing Love will raise funds for Natasha and Peter to work with garden designer Simon Rickard (Former head gardener of the Diggers Club) to imagine and plan their dream garden.
Questions and Answers
Q- Whose idea was this?
A- This was my (Heather’s) idea, but from what I hear, a lot of other people from Tarsh and Peter’s community have have also wanted to contribute to their garden in some way.
Q- Why a garden?
A – Why not? Also, gardens are growing things. Tarsh and Peter love nature. They have just finished building their home but haven’t had time or resources to do landscaping while looking after Leroy.
Q – What will the money pay for.?
A – $1,000 will pay for ten hours consultation time with Simon. The rest will be for Tarsh, Peter and Simon to put toward materials and plants. Labour will be organised through working bees.
Q – Do Tarsh and Peter know about this?
A – Yes, they have been consulted and will get to create what they want with Simon. The project was my idea but Tarsh and Peter will have complete creative control of what happens in their garden. I am coordinating fund-raising, working bees and communications. Any other friends or family members of Tarsh and Peter who want to be on the project team are most welcome!
Who the heck is Heather?
I’m a friend of Tarsh and Peters. I noticed that they have lots of amazing friends and family who want to contribute to them. I happen to be a passionate gardener, know a great garden designer and do project management in my professional life. I wanted to give their community a way to get together to create something special and lasting.
